Captain America: Civil War in Comic Books!

Captain America has hit the movie screens with Captain America: Civil War. This will cover the comic book appearances of the characters in the movie. Captain America, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in Captain America Comics #1 (1941). This was reprinted in the Marvel Milestone Edition Captain America Comics #1 and in the Captain America: The Classic Years trade paperback. The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) first appeared in Captain America #117 (1969) by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. Cap’s war time pal, Bucky (Sebastian Stan), appeared as the Winter Soldier in Captain America #1 (2005). This was from Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting. They are aided by Sharon Carter, also known as Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp), who first appeared in Tales of Suspense #75 (1966) “30 Minutes to Live!” The creative team on that issue was Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Dick Ayers. The rest of his team includes Hawkeye, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who first appeared in Tales of Suspense #57 (1964) by Stan Lee and Don Heck. Also, Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), created by Lee and Kirby in The X-Men #4 (1964). Finally, Ant Man, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was created by David Michelinie and John Byrne in Marvel Premiere #47 (1979). Tony Stark, Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), has the other side of the Sokovia Accords. He first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 (1963) by Stan Lee, Larry Leiber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby. His fellow Avenger, War Machine, James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), was created by David Michelinie and Bob Layton in Iron Man #282 (1992). Also in the Avengers is Black Widow, Natasha Romanov (Scarlett Johansson) whose first issue was Tales of Suspense #52 (1964) from Stan Lee, Don Rico, and Don Heck.

Roy Thomas and John Buscema created the Vision (Paul Bettany) who first appeared in The Avengers #57 (1968). New to the team is T’Challa, the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) from Fantastic Four #52 (1966) by Lee and Kirby. Stark adds to his team Spider-Man, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) who of course first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962) by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. This was reprinted in a Marvel Milestone Edition, but expensive. You can check the Marvel Masterworks Amazing Spider-Man and the Essential Amazing Spider-Man trade paperbacks. William Hurt plays Secretary of State Ross who was a general in Incredible Hulk (2008). He was created by Lee and Kirby in The Incredible Hulk #1 (1962). One of the leaders of the Joint Terrorist Taskforce is Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) who was created by Christopher Priest and Kenny Martinez in Ka-Zar #17 (1998). The events of Civil War is set up by Helmut Zemo, he was known as Baron Zemo in the comics, and first appeared in The Avengers #6 (1964) by Lee and Kirby. Crossbones, Brock Rumlow, injured in Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014) was created by Mark Gruenwald and Kieron Dwyer in Captain America #360 (1989). The events are primarily in the Civil War limited series that lasted seven issues by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. It was collected in the Civil War trade paperback that is also printed with a cover of the movie and the Civil War: Captain America trade paperback. The basis for the top movie in the world rests in these comic books by some masterful talent.
