Marvel Avengers: Infinity War (2018)- Review

Thanos is demanding silence hence the popular anti-spoiler hashtag, #ThanosDemandsYourSilence, we are going to try and keep this as spoiler free as possible. However, we may allude to instances in the film that might reveal more then a reader wants to know. We recommend seeing Avengers: Infinity War as soon as possible before reading this review or anyone ruins the film. You truly want to be surprised, as the box office has proven, you will not be disappointed.

The hunt for the Infinity stones has brought Thanos, one of the biggest and baddest beings in the galaxy, to Earth where the last two of the stones is being held. The Avengers, the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic, and every creature in the known universe for that matter, are in harms way. Thanos is willing to destroy any and all life that stands in the way of obtaining the stones to complete his Gauntlet. The Infinity Gauntlet is a powerful glove that allows the wielder to harness and control the power of the Infinity Stones. The Stones themselves were created when the universe was born. Each one represents an element of what makes up the universe: Time, Mind, Power, Soul or Spirit, Reality, and Space Stones. No Emma Stone. Thanos has been hunting these stones for a very long time in order to restore balance to the universe. He’s being doing this manually up until now, which his earned him the reputation he has. With the Infinity Gauntlet he’d have the power to just “think it” and half the life in the Universe would cease to exist. He already has the mind stone, the stone that powered Loki’s scepter. The Infinity Gauntlet and the stones have been in the background, if not the plot point, of most of the Marvel movies.

Avengers: Infinity War is the culmination of the entire run of the Marvel movies. The plots of most of the MCU blockbusters have been linked together to lead to this moment in the Marvel timeline. Loki’s Scepter, The Tesseract from Captain America: the First Avenger and Thor. Thor 2:The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy both recovered a stone for the good guys. Thor has spent much of his “off screen” time looking for the stones personally, as he alludes to at the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok. To many fans, this is one of the most anticipated moments, in not just Marvel, but in movie history! It’s one of the appealing concepts of what comic book movies can do. Bring together established characters from other story lines into a “super” hero cross over movie. With so many stars on screen, he story was well balanced and you didn’t feel that any one Hero was lacking screen time. Each one of the Marvel movies has surpassed the next in box Office. It’s no surprise that the best Marvel movie to date is off to such an amazing start!

Avengers: Infinity War is two and a half hours of non-stop action. The movie didn’t let up from the opening moments. It’s tears at the heart early and often. At the end of the film I was left exhausted and with no more left in me. I’m was left in shock at the direction that Marvel decided to go with in an ending as definitive as we got in Infinity War. I know I wouldn’t be upset if the whole thing was all a “Thanos dream sequence” brought on by Dr. Strange to show him the pain he would actually be causing. Wishful thinking of a fanboy, I know. But thanks to the Infinity Gauntlet, not even death is permanent. Right? RIGHT?!!?

Thanos, although being the described as the worst villain in the galaxy, gives a sincere and almost logical reasoning for his purpose in life. There were times in the film where I ached for the man’s obvious pain and conflict but couldn’t help admire his determination and commitment. He is probably one of the best villains ever to grace the screen in cinema history. A creature who is both terrifying and charismatic. Josh Brolin brought a human side to a murderous creature that was almost hard to hate.

It’s rare I want to call a film perfect but this one was close to it as I’ve seen in a long time. When I say epic, I mean it’s epic on a Lord of the Rings/Two Towers Scale of “epicness”. An ending that will leave you feeling helpless, hopeless, and yet oddly satisfied. Not a happy ending in the least but a refreshing change from the norm when it comes to blockbuster movies pandering to the audience. A major kudus to the Russo Brothers, Marvel, and Disney for taking such a huge risk with so many beloved and well established characters! What better reward is there than the proof in the audience response and the box office receipts!

The acting from everyone involved with Avengers: Infinity War was on par with their previous performances which means: good. It’s hard to pick out individual performances with so much brilliance happening on screen. Everyone brought their A-Game!

Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. could have several more films together as Iron Man and his genius ward, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man…if only.

Josh Brolin really stole the show as Thanos, despite fanboy complaints over his look and costume, he delivered a powerful and moving performance as a “murdering psychopath”. He had me cheering for him at times, I mean, the guy made sense and he had proven that his method, although savage, worked! Go #teamThanos? Anyone?

The bar has definitely been raised with Avengers: Infinity War. It was non stop action from start to finish and did not disappoint. Go see it again and again!

Deadpool 2, also starring Josh Brolin as X-man from the future, Cable, is coming out later this month. Ant-Man 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, is the next up on the MCU slate. Both films have their work cut out for them!
