What is the Invasion!?

Jondee here at Durla,

crossover-dc

The Berlantiverse, Supergirl, Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, are all crossing over in what is said to be based on Invasion!. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim had that the cross over will be “taking inspiration from a DC crossover from the late 1980s known as Invasion!, which featured an alien race called the Dominators, who’d previously vexed the Legion of Superheroes.” So what is Invasion!? This was a crossover event in DC comics with a three issue series in 1989. It was written by Keith Giffen and Bill Mantlo with art by Todd McFarlane on the first two issues and the third issue by Bart Sears. The Dominators, a manipulative race that were introduced in Adventure Comics #361 (1967), led the invasion forming the Alliance based on fears of the metahumans on Earth. They launch a Gene Bomb that affects many of the heroes of Earth and takes away their powers. This would be Flash and Firestorm. Mister Terrific, Ragman, and Vixen would have their powers. So the following is basing it on the comic books, but the television shows of course can follow their own ways. Most of the Invasion aliens are from Legion of Super-Heroes so this may be a way to introduce the Legion, maybe in a Legends of Tomorrow episode since they are from the 30th and 31st centuries.

If the series follow the invasion, I think Team Arrow takes on the Warlords of Okaara. They were brutish warriors who first appeared in Tales of the New Teen Titans #4 (1982). Flash faced the shapeshifting Durlans. They were a race first seen in Action Comics #283 (1961). Firestorm took on the Khunds so maybe they will be in Legends of Tomorrow. A Khund was seen in Supergirl episode “Falling” played by Gary Kasper, maybe he returns. They were a Legion villain seen in Adventure Comics #346 (1966). Most likely Supergirl will be opposed by the Dominators. Guggenheim has said about the Dominators will be created with “prosthetics and computer effects to achieve a feature film-quality look which is faithful to Invasion! artist Todd McFarlane’s interpretation of the characters.” Superman’s power is natural not activated by a metagene so he keeps his powers. The same could be said of Supergirl so she will be key to the Invasion. The others with powers would be Mon-El and Miss Martian. Speaking of which, part of the invading aliens are Daxamites which is an army of Supermen.  Of course, Mon-El would be divided in fighting his own people and the last survivors of the planet if they are on the show.  Supergirl’s villains, Livewire and Silver Banshee would lose their powers. The Gene Bomb is said to have given mental powers to Maxwell Lord so that will be interesting if Peter Facinelli is still on the show. Martian Manhunter mind reads the Dominator who created the Gene Bomb and this helps restore the powers of the metahumans. Maybe this will be done by Maxwell Lord who of course has the resources of Lord Industries in the Supergirl show. This will all be an interesting set up with President Marsdin (Lynda Carter) who may be bringing aliens together as a Dominator or forming them as an alliance against the invasion as a Durlan. The Invasion! begins with Arrow episode 508, Legends of Tomorrow episode 207, and more soon!
