Gotham, “Better Reign in Hell…” Review!

GOTHAM: L-R: Donal Logue, Ben McKenzie, and Michael Chiklis in the “Mad City: Better to Reign in Hell…” season premiere episode of GOTHAM airing airing Monday, Sept. 19 (8:00-9:01 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2015 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX.

An exciting new season starts on Fox for Gotham. This season being titled ‘Mad City’. It seems a rather apt title given the going ons in this episode. Fish Mooney is back and on the loose with an army of genetically mutated monsters terrorizing Gotham. Gordon, after not being able to reconcile with Lee has resigned from the GCPD and become a bounty hunter. We also have Bruce beginning to uncover the Court of Owls, resulting in him being kidnapped by a Talon at the end of the episode. For those of you unfamiliar with the Court of Owls, the storyline in the the New 52 Batman comics is well worth a read. Speaking of, we have a doppleganger Bruce Wayne running around Gotham trying to figure out who he is. Selina is working for Fish, and when Ivy follows her ends up running afoul of one of the monsters, her fate is unknown. Finally, we have some first appearances, Valerie Vale (Jamie Chung) presumably the well known Vicki Vale from the comics and a possible first appearance of Man-Bat.

Overall, I think it was a strong start for Gotham. I’m excited to see more of Ivy, though I’ll be sorry to see her actress go if things go the way I think they will. I’m honestly not too terribly excited to see Fish Mooney back, and I’m wonder how they are not going to make the story arc not feel anti-climactic if they decide to kill her off again. It’s fun to see Gordon off on his own and not particularly caring about the rules, though I imagine he will be back at the GCPD before long. What I am most excited about though, and I think I speak for most of the fandom when I say this, is the Court of Owls. it is one of the best Batman storylines of recent years and I cannot wait to see it on screen. I’d give this episode a solid four out of five batarangs.
