Everything’s Archie! The first episode was written by series creator and chief creative officer of Archie Comics, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. It has a title, a nod to the 1986 film about a murder. Riverdale, Jughead’s narration about the small town, we get Pop’s Chock Lit Shoppe, graveyard, high school. A car being driven by two ginger haired twins, Jason (Trevor Stines) and Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), they go out for a boat ride, then a storm, boy scouts find Cheryl crying, alone. A police boat looks for Jason’s body on Sweetwater River, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) watches, and then writes it all down. Cheryl’s explanation is that he accidentally drowned. Then, Veronica (Camila Mendes) rolls up in a limo with her mother, Hermione (Marisol Nichols) to the Pembrooke Hotel. They are greeted by Mr. Smithers (Tom McBeath). Her mother wants burgers. Getting ready, Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), in her underwear with Kevin Keller (Casey Cott), gay best friend, on the bed. Kevin checks out Archie (K.J. Apa) out through the window. Betty (dressed) with Archie talking about a book signing with Toni Morrison. Archie was working with his dad pouring concrete. He tells her he was working on songs. Betty asks him about tutoring with Ms. Grundy and football, then about their friendship when Veronica walks in. She calls herself “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, but Riverdale is “In Cold Blood.” Betty is supposed to give her a tour at the school the next day. Archie gets ready for school and tells his father, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry) about football tryouts. Betty’s mother, Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) is worried about her sophomore year. Riverdale High, Archie looks at his lyrics, his fellow football team member, Reggie (Ross Butler) stops by including Moose Mason (Cody Kearsley). The tour, Betty goes in the history of the school, Kevin drops in and Veronica knows he’s gay. Her father’s rep has followed Veronica. Archie walks in to Josie and the Pussycats singing! Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) tells him about their story and doesn’t want to hear his lyrics. Veronica asks about Archie to her new friends. Kevin brings up Jason. Cheryl tells about her brother in a school assembly, she eyes Jughead in the bleachers alone with his laptop, she wants the semi-formal to go on.  Archie stares at Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Flashback, she stops her car to give Archie a ride. They get to spending time in the back seat of her car!

Archie tries to get the attention of Ms. Grundy and finally brings up her full name Geraldine and wants to talk about music. Construction site, Fred meets with Hermione at his office, she wants a job. He says he split up with his wife Mary and tells her he can’t hire her because of her husband. Archie at his computer playing Betty his song while Veronica joins them with Kevin who says that Cheryl is the talk of the school. She joins them when Archie leaves. Cheryl wants Veronica to join cheerleading where she’s the captain. Veronica offers to help Betty. Archie plays his music for Ms. Grundy, she says “It’s very real”, he wants to talk it over. Flashback, they are on a blanket when they hear a bang. Cheerleader tryouts, Veronica and Betty, Cheryl wants the sizzle. Veronica kisses Betty, ok, this is my favorite show. Cheryl asks Betty about her sister and Jason. She has dug her fingernails into her palm until it bleeds. Cheryl has taken Veronica, but rejects Betty, Veronica takes her down! “You wanted fire?, Cheryl Bombshell?, my speciality is ice”, classic! Football practice, the coach tosses him Jason’s jersey to put him on the varsity team. Veronica gets Betty’s cheerleader outfit ready, walking, Veronica tells her about what happened after her father’s arrest. Betty admits that her mother broke her sister, Polly, over Jason. Veronica brings in Archie to ask Betty to the dance. She blurts out to ask them out to the dance. Veronica convinces him. Betty dances in her room. Her mother is not happy, but Veronica goes out to get a dress. At the hotel, Hermione sees a bag that is on a table, she opens it to find money, her husband. Archie playing guitar, his father has a beer, he called up the coach. Archie admits he was lying to both of them. Fred Andrews wants his son to take over his company. He tells his son’s decisions have consequences.

The dance, Archie has on his arms, Betty and Veronica. Betty asks about the football decision. He looks at Ms. Grundy sitting at a table, Archie gets a drink, and talks with her again. Archie wants lessons and promises not to talk about July 4th. Cheryl as the chairperson with her red dress introduces Josie and the Pussycats. They sing Cyndi Lauper’s “All Through the Night.” Archie walks up to Betty to dance. Veronica and Kevin look at Betty, he looks at Ms. Grundy. Cheryl wants them at her after party, danger! The party, Cheryl has Archie play spin the bottle, it lands on Veronica, in the closet they have small talk. They talk about relationships. He says he never felt anything for Betty! They lean in and kiss, oh boy! They walk out of the closet and find Betty is gone so they walk after her. Veronica goes to find her friend. At home, Veronica sees her mother, and just lays there. Jughead notes that Archie is walking into Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe asking for Betty. He gets a seat next to Jughead who is working on his story. He tells Archie to just talk to her and that would have worked with himself. Archie goes to Betty’s house, she walks out, and asks him if he likes her. “I’ll never be good enough for you”, he says, I can believe it? Jughead says two hearts were broken. Two of the football players go skinny dipping at night and find a body, Jason with a bullet in his head! Jughead notes that the town is changed as the body is taken away with the town watching. I was dying that Jughead was not a close part of Archie’s circle, but love that he is the observer, distant. Five Red Circles out of Five!
