The DC Universe on Film!

Jondee here at Smallville,

The DC Universe is set apart from our world with cities out of the imagination. Which means that anything can happen. The Marvel Universe is centered around New York City with invasions by aliens, demons, Atlanteans, and subterranean peoples that can be a stretch. One of the books laying out the DC Universe was the Atlas of the DC Universe published by Mayfair Games in 1990. On the west coast is Star City, the home of Green Arrow, found in California. In comics, it first appeared in More Fun Comics #73 (1941). The show, Arrow, which started in 2012 has Star (changed from Starling) City as the setting. National City is also in California. It is the city of Supergirl, and the location of Catco. It is a new addition to the DC universe and of course the setting of the Supergirl tv series. National City found its way to comic book form in the Adventures of Supergirl adaptation and also into the DCU with Supergirl: Rebirth #1. Central City’s first appearance was Showcase #4 (1956) which of course featured the Flash. The city is located in Missouri across the Missouri River from Keystone City, Kansas. The city was featured in The Flash tv series that ran from 1990 to 1991. The Iron Heights prison first appeared in Flash: Iron Heights (2001). The prison was found in Keystone City. It was seen in the Arrow and The Flash tv series. Smallville is a city in Kansas that first appeared in More Fun Comics #101 (1945). The town showed up on film with the 1978 Superman movie. It was of course the focus of the tv show, Smallville, which ran from 2001 to 2011.

The Belle Reve prison, housing the inmates of the Suicide Squad is found in Louisiana. Specifically, the Terrebonne Parish, this is in the central part of the state on the most southern part on the Gulf of Mexico. It first appeared in Suicide Squad #1 (1987). The prison was first on screen in the Smallville episode, “Calling” (2003) and later becomes home for the Suicide Squad in season ten. Of course it is seen in the current David Ayer film. Midway City which was part of the mission in the film first appeared in Brave and Bold #34 (1961) featuring Hawkman and Hawkgirl. The city is located in Michigan on the banks of North Channel across from Canada. Metropolis, The Big Apricot, is in Delaware and first appeared in Action Comics #16 (1939). The main points of interest are located in New Troy, the central borough of Metropolis, this includes the Daily Planet and LexCorp. It debuted on film with the 1948 Superman serial. Gotham City, the residence of Batman now seen in the Gotham tv series, is located in New Jersey. It first appeared in Batman #4 (1940). The west side of Gotham is flanked by the Gotham River. The Finger River cuts across Gotham into Miller Harbor. The far north outside of the city is Wayne Manor. The Arkham Asylum is kept apart from Gotham by the Gotham River which splits into the Sprang River on the east side. It is in the Gotham Narrows separated from the north and middle parts of the city. Gotham on film first appeared in the 1943 Columbia Pictures serial. It is of course the setting of the Gotham tv series that began on 2014. New parts of the country are being revealed in the DCU on tv screens and on film.
