Top Geek Speak TV Movies for 2016!

Jondee here at the box office,

2015 gave us comic book movies, a new Jurassic Park and Mad Max film, and two Pixar movies. 2016 has even more promise. The return to the world of Harry Potter. The Russo Brothers are returning to Captain America. Plus, we are getting the next Star Wars film in Rogue One. This list of ten films is based on the trailers and convention presentations (mainly D23 and Celebration).

10 Warcraft – June 10, Duncan Jones really seems invested in bringing Warcraft to film, loved Moon (2009), but while the trailer has shown a different angle to Orcs, there is one shot that is glaring the first castle that is on the right corner, fake even for a video game. I don’t know if that will be fixed or if there will be CGI slips in the film. The downside is I really don’t know the characters, I know a few, but not enough to understand who is important and what they are going through.

9 Doctor Strange – November 4, there is potential with this Marvel film and character, hopefully they follow the work of Steve Ditko in terms of design, Benedict Cumberbatch classes up the doc, as well as the rest of the cast. I loved Deliver Us from Evil (2014)with Eric Bana playing real life NYPD Ralph Sarchie. There is tension, creepiness, and some horror creeping at the edges, hopefully Scott Derrickson brings this to Strange. This is fairly low because I don’t know where the story is going and no trailer yet.

8 Suicide Squad – August 5, this has good potential for showing us comic book villains, David Ayer was brilliant on Fury, Margot Robbie has potential for giving us an interesting Harley Quinn, at least the cosplayers are following her, I like the diversity of the cast, the downside, if there are too many characters, that they become anti-heroes, and the big question mark is Will Smith in the film turning it into a Will Smith film? Suicide Squad with Deadshot starring Will Smith? Deadshot has been a part of the comic book Suicide Squad, but not a leader or front line guy, he’s deadly on the sidelines. The team has been on Smallville and Arrow.

Lily James and Bella Heathcote in Screen Gems' PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES.

7 Pride and Prejudice and Zombies – February 5, I can’t wait for this film! Love the trailer, Lily James was perfect in Cinderella, Charles Dance as Mr. Bennet? awesome, it’s a nice contrast to have stuffy 19th century costume drama vs. zombie horror! Seth Grahame-Smith uses Jane Austen to bring in the “good parts version” (Princess Bride reference). Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) stands as one of my favorite horror films. I learned more in that fictional film about Lincoln than I did Spielberg’s film.

6 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – November 18, this has great potential with J.K. Rowling providing the prequel script expanding the Potterverse, it does have an awkward title, but Eddie Redmayne seemed like an interesting choice for Newt Scamander, the trailer is intriguing, but the downside is I have no idea where the story is going and what world Scamander is walking in, but it looks like fun. I hope the cast is more diversified, main characters, not supporting characters, it’s America! the great American melting pot, ok that’s a song from Schoolhouse Rock.
